According to information provided by the government, this treatment has passed the first phase, that is, development. The next steps are preclinical and clinical trials so it can be approved as a medicine.
The information was shared through the Israeli Ministry of Defense's Twitter account, which explained that this development meets three key parameters for assessing its potential effectiveness. The first is that it is monoclonal and contains a low proportion of proteins harmful to humans. The second is that it is able to neutralize this coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), and the third is that it was tested on an aggressive type of coronavirus.
The Ministry of Defense has already contacted laboratories and pharmaceutical companies to be ready to mass-produce the medicine if it is approved. It is not yet known what regimen the medicine will require, whether a single dose or multiple doses.
This announcement adds to the one made by Gilead Sciences (already in the clinical phase of research) that its treatment shows positive results in severe coronavirus patients.
The medicines differ in their effect: the one developed by the Israeli government is an antibody capable of neutralizing the virus, while remdesivir helps improve oxygen levels in severe patients.
These announcements come at a time when there are 130 research efforts to discover medicines and treatments for COVID-19. Several of them, including a Chinese medicine, are already in clinical trials, that is, in humans.
